We were at the altar only a few years ago, so happy and in love, finally! I was getting married to the man of my dreams. Yes, it was him, Mr. Dark, Tall and Handsome, the sweetest, kindest person I have ever met. What more did I want than to say I do to this fine gentleman whom i was head over heels in love with and who in turn adored me enough to ask me to marry him.

The wedding ceremony was amazing – everything I ever wanted. The deco, music, food, the entire atmosphere was impeccable. Our family and friends were there in their numbers, virtually all of them come bearing gifts. It was a mixture of feelings. We were reminded of the fact that we were no longer single and independent, virtually accountable to no one. Yet we were excited about our new life together as husband and wife.

The event was just perfect, and so I expected our marriage to be; full of love, endless outings, playful moments and all the beautiful things we use to do while dating. But…..far from that. Marriage is not an easy thing. I wish someone had hammered the realities into my head.  The wedding has long ended and we are left to ourselves. We no longer seem to do anything together. He is always busy doing this or that leaving me to throw at dartboard. It’s not like I don’t have anything profitable to do, it’s just that he is hardly ever around.

Our first child is 8 months old and that in itself is an issue – children – but I promised to love the ride even when the road is rough. I said I do to this man, I vowed to have and to hold in sickness and in health till death do us part. Till death oo. Now I wish someone had told me the truth about marriage, I wish I had listened and read more about it, I wish I had taken my time to understand what I was getting myself into. This thing called marriage is long journey with many winding roads. Love is not enough, you need patience and understanding in order to enjoy the ride.

If you are now about to start the journey, I would advise you take your time to learn more about it, pray about it and prepare adequately for it. There will be surprises as well as hard and bad times, but that is the essence of adding patience and understanding to your luggage when packing for the journey.

Hmmm! This thing called marriage.
